Landscaping in Manchester

The Gap Between a Didsbury Back Garden and a Wythenshawe Plot

Manchester is roughly eleven miles south-east of Bolton, bordered by Salford, Trafford, Stockport, Tameside and Oldham. Inside that boundary the gardens are not remotely alike. Much of Chorlton, Withington and Didsbury — the M20 and M21 side — is Victorian terraces and villas with long, narrow back gardens.

Wythenshawe, out at M22 and M23, is interwar garden-city semis on larger, more open plots. East and north, through Levenshulme, Gorton, Moss Side and Blackley in M18, M19 and M40, it shifts again, and the centre is mostly apartments.

A long thin plot and a wide open one want opposite treatment.

Shade, Roots and Boundaries Shared Three Ways

The thing that decides most inner-suburb gardens is light.

A long Victorian plot with houses on both sides and mature trees at the end can be in shadow for most of the day, and no amount of turf survives that.

It is usually the reason a lawn has thinned to moss, and it is why the honest answer is sometimes a hard surface, or artificial grass on a permeable sub-base, rather than another attempt at seed.

Roots are the second one.

Where old street trees and garden trees have been in place for decades, they are already under the area you want to pave, and a patio that ignores them lifts. Layouts can be planned around roots and canopies that are staying.

Third, boundaries.

On these streets one garden often touches three others, so the line, the height and who owns which side matter before any post goes in.

What a Whole-Garden Project Covers Here

We quote a Manchester garden as one piece of work rather than a patio from one trade and a fence from another.

FAQs

Manchester – Your Questions

Our Didsbury garden is long, narrow and dark at the far end. What can actually be done with it?

Stop treating it as one space.

A terrace by the back door, a change of surface or a step partway down, then a destination at the far end reads far better than a single corridor of lawn.

The dark end is usually where a hard surface or artificial grass earns its place, because grass in permanent shade will keep failing however it is laid.

We have a big open lawn on a Wythenshawe semi. Is that a landscaping job or just gardening?

It becomes a landscaping job the moment you want the space to do more than one thing.

The larger interwar plots out there have the room to be divided properly into seating, lawn and a working corner, usually with side access that makes the build far simpler than on a terrace.

The garden is full of roots from next door’s trees. Does that stop a patio going down?

It changes where it goes and how it is built rather than ruling it out.

Paving laid straight over live roots will move, so the options are to site the surface clear of them or to build in a way that does not fight them.

That is a decision made on the ground at the site visit, not from a photograph.

Our house is in the centre and the outdoor space is a small courtyard. Is it worth landscaping?

Small spaces respond well because every square metre is visible, so surface, levels and screening do all the work.

The practical questions are access for materials and whether the space is yours to alter, which is worth establishing before anything is designed.
