Artificial Grass in Manchester

Two Very Different Manchester Lawns

Manchester asks for two almost opposite jobs under one heading. In the southern suburbs — much of Chorlton, Withington and Didsbury — the housing is Victorian terraces and villas with long, narrow back gardens shut in by high walls, mature trees and the houses either side.

Out at Wythenshawe it is interwar garden-city semis on plots that are wider, flatter and open to the sky.

One is a light problem, the other a wear problem. A narrow south-city garden loses its grass to shade and root competition; a big open family lawn loses it to being walked and played on every weekend of the year.

Artificial grass answers both, but not with the same dig or the same quote.

Shade, Roots and the Long Narrow Back Garden

A long garden with a wall on both sides and something tall at the end gets direct sun for a couple of hours in summer and almost none in winter. Real grass thins, moss takes the damp end, and reseeding buys a season at most.

Shade is the one thing artificial grass genuinely does not care about.

Roots are different.

Where a mature tree or old hedge line runs close to the surface we cannot dig to full depth without doing damage, so the sub-base over that stretch is worked out on the site visit rather than assumed.

Drainage carries the rest.

The clay-heavy ground common across this part of the region holds water rather than taking it away, and an artificial lawn only drains into what is put underneath it.

What our artificial grass work in Manchester includes

  • Stays green in deep shade
  • Prepared, permeable sub-base
  • Root zones assessed on site
  • Joins set out down the garden
  • Kiln-dried infill and fixed edges
  • Small yards and full lawns

Wythenshawe and the Lawn That Gets Used Hard

The garden-city semis around M22 and M23 were laid out with proper gardens, and a lot are still family lawns in the fullest sense — goalposts, a trampoline ring, a worn track to the gate. Grass gives up on wear long before weather.

On a wide lawn the levels and the joins decide the finish.

A large area shows every dip, so the sub-base is compacted and checked rather than raked and hoped for, and the seams are set out to run with the light and the fall of the garden.

FAQs

Artificial Grass in Manchester — Your Questions

Our Chorlton garden is long, narrow and in shade most of the day. Will it look right?

Shade is where it makes the most obvious difference, because there is no light level at which it thins out.

In a long narrow garden what matters is the direction the pile lies and where the joins fall: run down the length rather than across, it reads as one surface instead of strips.

There are big tree roots just under our lawn. How deep do you have to dig?

Deep enough for a proper sub-base, which is why roots matter.

Where they run close to the surface, digging to full depth damages the tree or is not possible, so that stretch needs looking at on site.

A protected tree changes the answer again, so tell us if you know of one.

Our only access is through the house or down the back alley. Can the work still be done?

Yes, and it is the usual position on the terraced streets.

It changes the method rather than the outcome: spoil out and stone in by barrow, and materials cut where there is room to work.

Say so when you enquire so it is in the plan.

We have a big open lawn in Wythenshawe. Does it still work at that size?

It does, and wear is usually why people ask. The difference at that size is that nothing is forgiven: a wide lawn shows every dip in the base and every rushed join.

More of the day goes into levelling and compacting than into the grass.
