Artificial grass for Wigan gardens, laid on a permeable sub-base with kiln-dried infill and neat, fixed edges — plus honest advice on whether it is the right answer for your garden.

Wigan sits low and comparatively flat — west of Bolton, on the River Douglas and the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. It is old coalfield country, and the clearest sign of that is the Flashes, the lakes south of the town that filled in where the ground sank after mining.
Water finds the lowest point it can, and plenty of Wigan gardens sit on exactly that kind of ground.
That matters far more for an artificial lawn than the grass itself does. The surface is porous, but it can only drain into whatever is put underneath it — so the sub-base does all the real work.
Where a lawn already puddles for days after heavy rain, the honest answer is to sort out why before anything is laid over the top, rather than hiding the problem under a green surface.
It is the same reason we dig out to a proper depth rather than skimming the old turf off — a shallow bed over soft ground is what causes the dips and ripples later on.
A small back yard on the terraced streets near the town centre. A north-facing strip beside the house that never properly dries out. A worn track where the dog goes round the garden every day. A lawn nobody has time to cut.
The grass itself does not mind shade — it stays green where a real lawn would thin out.
Roots are the problem: where they run close to the surface, digging out a full-depth sub-base is either difficult or unwise. Heavy leaf fall does not disappear either.
An artificial lawn under a mature tree swaps mowing for sweeping rather than removing the work, and we would rather say so on the site visit.

Usually, but not by laying it straight over wet ground.
The lawn drains into the sub-base beneath it, so if water is already sitting there it has to be given somewhere to go first.
That might mean digging deeper, building more fall into the stone layer, or drainage work before anything else happens. We would far rather tell you that at the quote stage than after.
Shade is not the issue — artificial grass stays green where a real lawn thins out. Roots are.
Where large roots run just below the surface we cannot dig out to a full depth without damaging them, so that part of the garden may be better suited to something else.
It needs looking at on site rather than guessing from a photo.
Less than a lawn, but not none.
Leaves and debris need clearing off, the pile benefits from a brush now and then to stand it back up, and areas a dog uses need rinsing down.
Anyone telling you it is a fit-and-forget surface is overselling it.
Small yards are often where it looks best, because the whole surface is taken in at once and every edge is on show.
In a space that size the detail that decides it is how the grass is finished against walls, paving and gullies — that is where a neat job and a rough one separate.
