Salford sits about eight miles south of Bolton, on the far bank of the River Irwell from Manchester and across the Ship Canal from Trafford. Much of Pendleton, Broughton and Eccles is Victorian terraces with narrow back plots. Swinton and Worsley are largely interwar semis.
Around Salford Quays and Chapel Street there are apartments and townhouses with small enclosed yards, plenty of them handed over as bare topsoil.
Three different starting points, sharing the M3, M5, M6, M7, M27, M28 and M30 districts.
At one end is a Victorian back plot in Pendleton or Broughton — small, walled, paved once or twice already, with whatever the last owner did still under the surface.
At the other is a new-build plot near the Quays: level, empty, no real boundaries and a layer of topsoil over builder’s ground.
The first is a subtraction job and the second an addition job, but both are quoted the same way — as one garden rather than a patio here and a fence there.
On the terraced streets it is what is already standing: old brick boundary walls, gate posts and the footings of long-gone outbuildings.
Near the Quays and along the Irwell valley the ground opens out and there is nothing between a garden and the weather, which loads a fence line and makes screening a structural question rather than a decorative one.
Post fixings, panel type and the spacing of the run all follow from it.

Our Bolton landscaping service explains how a whole-garden build is put together from first visit to finish, and if you are over on the Wigan side the same thinking is set out for landscaping in Wigan.
It starts underneath.
A handover plot is usually a thin layer of topsoil over ground that was worked by machines and never consolidated for a garden, so the first questions are what the levels are doing, where water goes and what sub-base a patio or lawn needs.
Once that is settled the layout is genuinely open, which is the advantage of an empty plot.
Not automatically.
A sound old wall gives a small plot height and privacy that a new fence takes years to match, so it is worth keeping where it is safe and on your land.
Where it is leaning, undermined or built off nothing, we say so at the site visit rather than building a new garden up against it.
Mainly through exposure.
Open ground near the water gives a fence line far more wind to carry than a sheltered terrace plot does, so posts, fixings and panel choice get more attention there.
Shade and damp in the enclosed yards nearby pull the other way, and affect whether real turf is a sensible choice at all.
Often, yes — groundwork and the patio as one phase, boundaries and lawn as the next.
The one thing to know is that staging a job means some of the setting up and access work happens twice, so we go through what that does to the quote before you commit to it rather than afterwards.
